Burnout: how to prevent it? The 4 warning signs

Talentis is launching its new series today: Minute Coaching, to respond in a very pragmatic way to topics that question you throughout your professional career. Today's topic concerns burnout. How do you spot the warning signs before it's too late? What I would like to say first of all, in the 15 years that we have been supporting talents, managers and leaders, is that the people who are likely to reach the stage of burnout are not the people we imagine at the beginning.

Burnout: Who is affected?

We often think that they are people who are quite tired by nature, rather stressed by nature, who have a slightly weak constitution... not at all. Candidates for burnout in your company are the ones who have the most energy, who work with the most strength, and who usually show no signs of fatigue. If you are one of those people who are always at maximum energy, who never feel tired, who consider that they can always do more, who never put limits on their work time or their personal time for that matter. If you work 14 hours a day, If you in addition, you participate in marathons or you devote yourself to three hours of Cooking, you are probably a candidate for big fatigue.Proceeding from this, what are The signals I need to keep in mind to check that I am taking good care of my energy throughout my professional career and that I am not putting myself at risk of falling into sudden fatigue, or falling into burnout, or potentially experiencing a depression?

>> Give your managers and managers the opportunity to manage their energy on a daily basis!

Signal No. 1 of the onset of burnout: Difficulty concentrating.

You are a hyper-efficient, hyper-committed person and little by little you find that you often have memory loss, difficulty concentrating, difficulties in getting a clear picture of what should be said or what should be done. You take a long time to make a decision, to think. You start reading an email 10 times to understand its substance. This is a first signal. You have difficulty clarifying your thoughts. Pay attention to it.

Signal 2: Impossibility to take a step back.

You are irritated for a yes or for a no. A mistake annoys you. Nonsense irritates you. You can't take a step back anymore. Sometimes you are extremely calm, sometimes you are extremely irritable, but infinitesimal little things annoy you in a fairly regular manner and rather out of step with respect to the impact of the subject.

Signal 3: Impossibility to set limits.

Third signal, You can no longer set yourself a limit. You no longer know what you can and cannot accept. The hours are extended. You work at night, you work at the weekend. You start looking at your texts and emails at 6 am, you finish at midnight and it seems normal to you. It is when it seems normal to you that we, coaches, are very worried. No longer knowing how to put limits on your time and consider it normal is obviously a very early sign of burnout.

Signal 4: Loss of self-confidence.

Fourth signal, You see things in black. You feel like you'll never get out of it and you start to think you're getting less intelligent. You start to feel that you are less effective, but you also blame yourself. You're less able to produce value and You always feel a little more guilty by always working a little moreIt's a hellish system in which you feel both a victim and a culprit. Now, The signal is really red. You are in a system where you will have to react. Without working on the recovery, As we call that in coaching (ability to refocus), you are going straight to the wall.

Burnout: signals outside the company.

In addition to the professional signals I just told you about, it is important that I mention what is going on. outside the professional field.Signals that your loved ones, that those around you perceive and that you often tend to completely deny or put aside. You are much sadder than you are by nature. You no longer want to do the activity you used to love: running; going for a swim in the pool. You say all the time that you are tired and that you cannot do it... At that moment, it is time to take action.

What should you do in the event of such early signs of burnout?

Don't waste any more time.Do two things: First, go see a psychiatrist, a doctor.Burnout, depression, depression, it's a disease. There is no shame in being sick. Second, work on yourself, whether in coaching or therapy.

to support your managers and managers in managing their energy over time

Sit back, take the time and take care to say to yourself: “There is something wrong here. I'm going in circles. I need to get help. I need to take this time to see things more clearly and put myself back into a coherent, clear, crystal clear system.” If you can't see clearly you won't be able to do it alone. Really, I'm telling you. It is impossible to get out of a situation such as it is on your own.
