No more daddy-style coaching! New coaching methods

Coaching is constantly evolving and today offers new coaching and support methods to better meet the needs of companies and managers. Valérie Rocoplan, founder and director of Talentis, takes stock of the situation. How long has coaching existed in companies?

Valérie Rocoplan: Coaching in companies has existed for about a century. Psychology and psychoanalysis have been in vogue since the 1970s in the United States and in France since the 1980s and 1990s. Coaching "à la française" has very strong psychoanalytical and psychological aspects. This is not the case in Anglo-Saxon countries where it is only considered as training and preparation for managers, in the same way as training for example.

French coaches enjoy a reputation for seriousness and competence...French coaching is quite reassuring because coaches are trained very seriously, they are required to be certified by reputable schools.

Talentis, moreover, attaches great importance to the training of the coaches who work for it. For the past 25 years, the practice has been the same: it is a "one to one" session, lasting one to two hours, and outside the company, for example in the coach's offices and not in the place where the coachee works. The positive point is that the person is taken out of their daily working environment.

Can we envisage other forms of support?

They already exist! They are lively, accessible and adapted to the lives of the people they support. For example, telephone coaching has existed for a long time and has developed very strongly.

Skype, too, allows for shorter, more frequent sessions. There are also a lot of on-site sessions, going to see the coachee evolve in their work environment, shadowing for half a day, attending a meeting and being in facilitation with the team to really coach them.

And then, of course, with the emergence of coaching platforms, we can offer short sessions, à la carte, to work on a specific subject, for example to prepare a meeting. Is the Click & Coach platform a response to these new demands for support? Yes, because Click & Coach makes it possible to find a coach who perfectly matches the employee's expectations and the employee can organise his or her coaching schedule in a few clicks. Various tools, starting with Skype, allow a high level of reactivity. The employee can attend the sessions from wherever he wants, whenever he wants.

What are the expected evolutions of coaching?Today, coaching is quite expensive and takes a long time to implement. However, there are occasional needs that do not require full-time coaching. We can also obtain very interesting results in one or two hours. This is what we offer with our Click & Coach platform.

It allows all company talents to be accompanied in a simple and flexible way by a coach.

The HRD acts as a sponsor and supervisor: it allocates an hourly quota to the employees it wishes to support, and ensures their attendance and progress.

Each month, Talentis provides a detailed report that effectively tracks the needs and objectives of the coachees, as well as their participation.

How will the coach's work change in practice?Digital coaching is an important change. It is also accompanied by complementary practices such as yoga, mindfulness, voice coaching, in order to make the body work, and not only the intellect.
