Cycle of change: moving from astonishment to action.

Welcome to the 1st episode of our new Minute Coaching special “lockdown” series entitled “Cycle of change: moving from amazement to action.”

During this rather particular period, we will publish content very regularly to share with you what we think is essential to remain serene and efficient.

Elisabeth Kübler Ross, who was a doctor, had studied the cycles of change, also called cycles of bereavement, that people face when they go through rapid and unexpected changes, profound traumas. This parallel between a crisis as we are experiencing it and the cycles of change seemed essential to us to do to prepare ourselves for what we are going to experience.

1st stage of the change cycle: astonishment

The first step in the event of a sudden change is the state of Astonishment. Especially if this change is violent, totally unpredictable. What we are experiencing today, we have never experienced it. Therefore, what we feel for most of us is a form of astonishment, a difficulty to concentrate, a cloudy brain. An impression of dreaming, of having a nightmare, that we are going to wake up. In this case, if you are in this situation, The main thing is to breathe, to sit down, to listen to music. To do things calmly because in any case we are not able to make decisions optimally.

2nd stage of the change cycle: denial

The next step that we are going to take and that many of us may already be in, is the denial stage.“No but it's not possible, it's not true, there will be no lockdown. We can go for a walk, there will be no police in the streets...”Denial is the refusal to confront reality. This stage is a bit dangerous because it often blinds us and makes us losing the sense of reality.Our personal mission is to really confront this reality. In this case, it is possible to be helped by our teams, our manager, our environment, or a professional coach. The objective: finally really understand what is happening and take the right measure.

3rd stage of the change cycle: anger and/or fear.

The third stage after bewilderment and denial is the stage of Fear and anger. Sometimes it's just anger without necessarily being fear.Today, with this Coronavirus crisis, a large number of people will feel a form of fear that will be triggered by tetany, flight, denial, or aggressionWe are all going to go through this.“But this government should never have done that! But I should have stayed here, but I should have gone there...”It's going to be complicated to learn to Managing your own anger and not “throw” your emotional trash can in the face of your environment. We are in lockdown and, as a result, we will very quickly have relationship problems. The others will seem unbearable to us, we will be unbearable for others...Knowing how to manage and regulate conflicts will be essential. We'll talk about that in a future video.

4th stage of the change cycle: acceptance.

Say to yourself: “Ok, that's the way it is, I accept it. I agree to let go of what was there yesterday and look forward to tomorrow.”As a talent, manager or leader, how will we, every day, be able to say to ourselves: “What did I learn today? ”Every day, you will see, you will want To learn something new.A pile of books on your nightstand, concerts you want to listen to again, friends you want to reconnect with... Learning all these things, learning them again, seeing them or reviewing them again.We wish you all the best in accepting these different stages of the change cycle unreservedly. One after the other, they will be one step closer to returning to a more normal life, enriched by everything you have learned.
