How to manage intergenerational issues?

How can you become aware of the behaviour of these generations within your organisation?

Valérie Rocoplan: Each generation has its own identity, its own codes, its own points of reference. But, in business as elsewhere, age should not be the only criterion for classification: there are, in fact, 65-year-olds and 25-year-olds. And this is easily explained: being young means always wanting to learn, to question oneself, to want to move forward, not to be afraid to reinvent oneself.

However, in the digital age, companies seem to think that older people are no longer capable of being "drivers"...

Valérie Rocoplan: The majority of employees over 50 are not sufficiently used for their skills. Because companies still too often stigmatise this generation.

Let's mix people, ages, professions during the meetings: let's cross-fertilize all the experiences to get the best out of them!

How can we bring these skills together and get them to adhere to a common project?

Valérie Rocoplan: Obviously, this requires a lot of energy! But we can organise intergenerational forums, meetings or integration mentoring where each person brings his or her own experience, know-how and interpersonal skills to share them within the company. It is an interesting process where everyone can exchange and progress.

Has the arrival of digital technology in the company changed intergenerational relations?

Valérie Rocoplan: It 's a real upheaval that now concerns all companies. Five years ago, the vast majority of managers were unaware of the impact that digital technology would have on their business. Moreover, not everyone has yet realised that this is a wave that is sweeping everything away and that it is absolutely essential to exploit it.

Hasn't this influx of technology contributed to the possible widening of the generation gap?

Valérie Rocoplan: Of course, older people have not grown up with new technologies like the generation Y and Z employees who are entering the job market. This does not prevent them from accepting new things, from being informed and learning, from being in the flow, from surfing the technological wave. It is essential to boost oneself, to constantly challenge oneself. And seniors know this perhaps more than others.
