Team coaching: the 3 stages of team development

In a previous video we listed the 5 characteristics of a successful team: communication, co-responsibility, integrity, relationship and play. To get to this stage of performance, the road can be more or less long. A successful team is not built in a day. It is following a progression that team coaching makes it possible in particular to accelerate and anchor in the long term. From a sum of individuals focused on their tasks, to a cohesive team driven by the same vision, discover the 3 stages of development of a team.

1st stage of team development: the collection of individuals

It's the first stage of team development. Individuals are focused on their own tasks, goals, and results. Everyone is focused on developing their own skills and does not necessarily take a lot of interest in the tasks of other team members. Focused on their own progress, employees need to be reassured about their role and their specific contribution in the team. At this stage, technical competence and expertise prevail.

The role of the leader in stage 1:

To promote the development of each team member, the leader sets up a clear framework, sets individual goals, develops team operating rules and provides regular feedback.

2nd stage of team development: the group

Once past the first stage, team members are aware of their role and their sphere of responsibility within the collective. The attention is no longer focused exclusively on oneself, one's know-how and one's progress but more about the group and the common goals. Employees better understand their complementarities and interdependencies in the team. Thanks to quality relationships and interactions between members, the sharing of experiences and difficulties is rich and regular. The group is more involved in decisions and joint work processes.

The role of the leader in stage 2:

At this stage, the leader is working to strengthen the bonds between team members to properly circulate information between employees. The leader also seeks to create interdependent relationships and to Give autonomy to team members as to the areas of decision.

3rd stage of team development: the collaborative team

At this level, thanks to the sharing of skills, ideas and know-how, the team works with a high level of energy. Team members are focused on vision, organization, and collective strategy, which means that everyone feels co-responsible for everyone's success and for the common project.

As far as team values are concerned, the focus is no longer on individual success (see stage 1) but on the success of the team within the organization. We then speak of “team victories”.

The role of the leader:

To succeed at this stage, the leader create a learning and co-responsible team. That is to say, a team that seeks to assess itself and work on its progress points to become even more efficient.

To go through the stages and move from the nascent team stage where everyone is focused on their task, to the united team, combining performance and quality of interactions with other teams,

the collective can be supported through team coaching.

By working with a team coach, the leader and all team members will be able to become aware of the key factors necessary for the success of the team and put them into action in a conscious way.
